Plaids and Stripes

This Churn Dash quilt is made from various stripes and plaids, only the sashing being a solid. There are several old cotton shirts used as well, one of my favorite ways to acquire fabric! It measures 60 by 60 inches and the blocks are 12 inches.
I used triangle paper to make the half-square triangles, 4 inch size. I spray starch all my fabric to avoid distortion, in fact that is the only way I ever have any accuracy in my piecing. This was my first "on point" setting, and I think it turned out fairly well. You have to have the entire thing ready before you begin that type of setting. It is machine quilted with rayon thread. I did not mark it, just followed the pattern pieces and used a walking foot. The binding is an old curtain. I wanted this to look really old, and I think it does.
Here is the back:

I love this quilt--great use of plaids.
Although most of the plaids I collect are from men's shirts, I walk through the children's area of the thrift store to find some fabulous bits.

Lynn,
I do the same thing, I just look for any stripes, plaids, or ginghams in whatever size. I love your blog, just put a link on mine. You have some wonderful fabric in your quilts, I love your work. For some reason, I am getting double spacing when I add links, hopefully I can figure out why.

I like this one and it does look very old. I also love the socks. My greatgrandmother, Oe, would make one sock everynight after going to bed. Her bed was in the "living room." And she would knit by firelight. She had 14 children, and I suppose that the only way to keep everyone in socks was to knit, continually. I also know that she would knit hats and socks for children even poorer than her own.

Wow, how could anyone knit a sock in one night, I am amazed. I love interesting stories about quilters of the past, great story, thank. (Love your blog, too.).

Ohh, nice work! The more I see of plaids in quilts, especially scrappy quilts, the more I want to try using them. :)

I looked thru the rest of your blog recent posts too, and wow, you do some beautiful needlework! I can knit but never learned to crochet.

Thanks Forest Jane, you blog is great,I enjoy it very much. What I like about the plaids and stripes is that they look so old. Thrift shops are the best place for the fabric, but look for the 100 percent cotton stuff.
